We understand construction
A bespoke tailor reads a garment the way an architect reads a building. We understand how the canvas, padding, and seam allowances interact - and we know what can be changed safely and what cannot. This prevents the kind of damage that well-intentioned but uninformed alterations can cause.
We work with the cloth

What to Expect
Whether you are bringing in a single pair of trousers or an entire wardrobe, the process is the same: careful, unhurried, and focused entirely on you.
Initial Assessment
We examine the garment together - its construction, cloth, and current fit. We discuss what you would like to achieve and give you an honest assessment of what is possible. Some alterations are straightforward; others require more thought. We will always tell you before we begin.
Pinning & Marking
With the garment on your body, we pin and mark the adjustments. This is a collaborative process - you can see and feel each change as we work. For complex alterations, we may recommend a muslin fitting first.
The Work
Alterations are carried out in our Fitzrovia workshop by the same hands that produce our bespoke garments. Turnaround is typically 5–10 working days, depending on complexity. We will always give you a clear timeline at your first visit.
Final Fitting
You return to try the finished garment. We check every adjustment under proper lighting and in front of a full-length mirror. If anything needs refinement, we address it there and then - there is no additional charge for follow-up adjustments within the original scope of work.

Jackets & Blazers
From reshaping shoulders and adjusting sleeve pitch to tapering the body, relining, and replacing buttons. We work with the original construction - not against it - to refine fit while preserving the garment's character.
Sleeve Shortening/Lengthening
Adjusted from the shoulder or the cuff depending on construction. Functional buttonholes require working from the shoulder - we assess and advise before proceeding.
Take In/Let Out Sides
The body is tapered or released through the side seams to adjust the waist and chest. We check internal allowances to confirm how much can be let out before committing.
Shoulder Adjustment
One of the most complex alterations. The shoulder seam is repositioned and the sleeve head rebuilt to match. Required when a jacket is too wide or narrow across the shoulders.
Lapel Reshaping
The lapel width or roll can be adjusted by recutting the facing and re-padding the canvas. Typically requested when updating an older jacket to a more contemporary silhouette.
Relining
Full or partial replacement of the body and sleeve linings. We match the original construction method - hand-felled where the original was hand-felled - and can upgrade to silk or printed linings.
Button Replacement
Buttons replaced with matching or upgraded alternatives - horn, mother-of-pearl, or corozo. We keep records of replacement buttons for future consistency.
Trousers
Hemming, waist adjustment, tapering, and seat reshaping. We match the original finish - blind-stitched hems, pick-stitched edges - so the alteration is invisible.
Hemming
Shortened or lengthened with the original hem finish preserved - blind-stitched, turned-up cuff, or angled. We check the crease line alignment after every hem adjustment.
Waist In/Out
The waistband is opened and the seat seam adjusted. Built-in allowances in bespoke trousers allow significant adjustment without visible change to the garment.
Tapering
The leg is narrowed from the knee down, the inseam, or both. We maintain the crease line and ensure the trouser break sits correctly after the adjustment.
Seat Adjustment
The back rise and seat are reshaped for comfort and cleanliness of line. This is particularly important after weight change, where the seat often needs attention before the waist.
Shirts
Sleeve shortening, body tapering, collar and cuff replacement. We can reshape a shirt that fits through the chest but billows at the waist, or replace a frayed collar while keeping the body pristine.
Sleeve Shortening
Shortened from the cuff, with the placket and button reattached. The original cuff style and button are preserved.
Body Tapering
Darts or side seam adjustment to eliminate excess fabric through the waist and hips. Transforms a boxy shirt into a fitted one without affecting the shoulder or chest.
Collar Replacement
A worn or frayed collar is removed and replaced with a new collar cut to the same pattern. The original collar style and interlining are matched.
Cuff Replacement
Worn cuffs replaced with matching fabric. Single or double (French) cuffs replicated to match the original construction.
Waistcoats
Taking in, letting out, shortening, and adjusting the back strap and buckle. A waistcoat should sit flush without pulling or gaping - we ensure it does.
Take In/Let Out
Adjusted through the side seams and back panel. The front points must remain symmetrical after adjustment - we check alignment at every stage.
Shorten/Lengthen
The hem is raised or lowered to sit correctly against the trouser waistband. The bottom point angle is preserved or adjusted to suit the new length.
Back Adjustment
The back strap, buckle, and back panel are adjusted for a cleaner fit. Particularly important for waistcoats worn without a jacket.
Overcoats
Sleeve shortening, body adjustment, hemming, and full relining. Heavier cloth requires specialist pressing and more robust construction - we handle both.
Sleeve Shortening
Adjusted from the shoulder on heavier coats to preserve the sleeve taper. The sleeve head is rebuilt to maintain the original shoulder line.
Body Adjustment
Side seams and back seam adjusted to refine the silhouette. Overcoats must accommodate suit jackets underneath, so we fit over your normal layering.
Hemming
The coat is shortened or lengthened at the hem. We check the balance front-to-back after adjustment, as heavier cloths can shift the hang.
Relining
Full relining in silk, Cupro, or Bemberg. Overcoat linings take more wear than suit linings due to the weight of the garment - we use heavier-grade lining fabrics accordingly.

Standard-width curtains up to 150cm wide per panel. Clean hem finish with original weight retained.
Shorten Pair of Curtains (Medium)
Mid-width curtains from 150cm to 200cm per panel. Hem adjusted with lining re-attached where applicable.
Shorten Pair of Curtains (Large)
Wide or full-length curtains over 200cm per panel. Includes pressing and re-hanging guidance.
Cushion Zip Replacement
Replacement of broken or worn zips on cushion covers. Colour-matched zip, invisible finish.
Common Questions
Can you alter garments made by other tailors?
Absolutely. We regularly work on garments from Savile Row houses, Italian and Neapolitan makers, and high-quality ready-to-wear brands. We treat every garment with the same respect, regardless of where it was made.
Can shoulders be taken in?
In many cases, yes - though it is one of the more complex alterations. It depends on the garment's construction. A fully canvassed jacket with sufficient seam allowance can usually be adjusted. We will always assess this honestly before recommending the work.
How many fittings will I need?
Most alterations require one fitting (the initial pinning) and one collection appointment. More complex work - such as a full restyle or significant reshaping - may require an intermediate fitting. We will let you know at your first visit.
Do you alter women's garments?
Yes. We alter jackets, trousers, dresses, coats, and eveningwear for women with the same precision we bring to menswear. The principles of good fit are universal - and so is our commitment to getting it right.
Can you work on non-Western or cultural garments?
Absolutely. We regularly alter and custom-fit saris, lehengas, sherwanis, agbadas, kaftans, abayas, cheongsams, and traditional garments from every background. What is your turnaround time?
Standard alterations are typically completed within 5 to 10 working days. For urgent work, we offer an emergency repair service with same-day and next-day turnaround, subject to availability - please call us directly so we can assess the work and confirm timing. If you are using our door-to-door service, allow an additional day each way for collection and return.

Are alterations free for bespoke garments?
Yes. Every bespoke garment we make includes a lifetime alteration guarantee. As your body changes over time, we will alter your garment free of charge - no time limit, no conditions. Your pattern is stored permanently in our records, so adjustments are precise and consistent with the original construction.
Can I use your alteration service if I don't live in London?
Yes. Our strong recommendation is to visit our Cleveland Street showroom in person for the initial assessment, pinning, and marking - this ensures the best possible result. If you are unable to visit, we strongly recommend having your garment pinned and marked by a professional tailor local to you before posting it to us with a completed alterations form. Please note that garments sent by post are sent at the client's own risk - we cannot accept responsibility for items lost or damaged in transit. If a client chooses to mark their own alterations without using a professional tailor, we cannot be held responsible for the outcome of the work. Completed alterations are returned by insured Royal Mail Special Delivery anywhere in the UK.
When to Alter and When to Replace
The garment is well made with quality fabric and construction. The fit issue is within the garment's seam allowances - typically one to two sizes in either direction. The style is classic enough to remain relevant. The garment has sentimental value, or you have an emotional attachment to it. The cost of alteration is proportionate to the garment's value and the improvement it will deliver.
The garment is fused rather than canvassed, or cut from a cloth that will not hold a press. The change required exceeds the seam allowances - more than two sizes in either direction. The shoulders do not fit: the shoulder line is the one element that cannot be meaningfully altered. The garment is significantly worn - shiny lapels, thinning elbows or seat, or lining failing throughout. The cost of the work approaches a meaningful proportion of a new commission without delivering a comparable result.
We will always tell you honestly whether an alteration is worth doing. If we believe the result will not meet our standards or your expectations, we will say so - and suggest alternatives. Our reputation depends on every garment that leaves our workroom, whether we made it or not.

Garment Care & Aftercare
Proper care extends the life of any garment and reduces the need for alterations over time. A few simple habits make a real difference.
Hang properly
Use shaped wooden hangers that match the shoulder width. Wire hangers distort the shoulder line over time. Trousers should be hung from the cuff or folded over a padded bar.
Rotate your wardrobe
Wearing the same suit every day accelerates wear. Rotate between at least three suits to allow cloth to rest and recover. Wool is remarkably resilient when given time to breathe.
Brush, don't dry clean
After each wear, brush your suit with a natural bristle clothes brush. This removes surface dust and lint without chemicals. Dry clean only when genuinely necessary - once or twice a season at most.
Store seasonally
At the end of the season, clean garments before storing. Use breathable garment bags - never plastic. Cedar blocks deter moths naturally. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Address issues early
A loose button, a small tear, a trouser hem coming undone - these are five-minute fixes now but become larger problems if left. Bring garments in at the first sign of wear.
Know when to revisit
Bodies change. If you notice a jacket pulling across the back or trousers sitting differently, it may be time for a minor adjustment. A well-maintained garment can serve you for decades.
