Self-tie or pre-tied bow tie?

How does white tie differ from black tie?
White tie is the most formal dress code: tailcoat with white waistcoat, wing-collar shirt with studs, white bow tie, and patent shoes. Black tie is one step below. If an invitation says "Black Tie", do not wear white tie - it would be overdressing.
