The word itself derives from the Latin "vellutum" meaning "shaggy," describing the raised pile that gives velvet its distinctive tactile depth.
As a jacket fabric, velvet gained prominence through the Victorian smoking jacket - a short, comfortable garment worn in the drawing room after dinner to protect evening clothes from tobacco smoke. The transition from private loungewear to public eveningwear happened gradually through the early 20th century. By the 1960s, velvet dinner jackets had been embraced by everyone from Hollywood actors to rock musicians, establishing the garment as a legitimate black tie alternative rather than an eccentricity.
Today, the velvet dinner jacket occupies a distinctive position in menswear - more expressive than a standard dinner jacket, more structured than a smoking jacket, and unmistakably festive without being theatrical.
